“Erika! Don’t let go!”
The yell of desperation still rang in her ears, making her hands shake. Erika felt like she had been shaking for the last few days – had it only been a few days? – since that leap from the train to the rooftop of the building. She had not been gripping the other girl’s hand very hard when they jumped. If she fell, she didn't want to take Abby with her after all. But as it turned out, it was the other way around and if she had been gripping harder when Abby slipped on the edge of the roof, she might still be alive.
A young Erudite transfer was dead because of her.
She hadn’t been able to sleep that night. Amongst the raucous celebration of her new faction she could not forget that horrible moment when her grip on her fellow transfer failed and she fell to her death. She kept seeing the broken body of the girl on the pavement below, could barely believe the words of one of the Dauntless-born initiates.
“Whoever can’t keep up, gets left behind.”
Was that how it was in Dauntless? How on earth was she going to make it here? She didn’t even belong here. The others at least received aptitudes for the warrior faction, what on earth had she been thinking when she chose it? She wasn’t thinking. Not at all. She wished she could stop thinking now.
She rubbed at the back of one of her hands, to try and stop the shaking. The girl, Abby had been with another transfer from her faction. A young man that went by the name of Diggs. He seemed… angry, though Erika was sure he hadn't been that way when they all first met on the train. There was a connection between Abby and Diggs, though she wasn't entirely sure what it was. But that was mostly because she couldn't get anywhere near the large Erudite transfer. He was avoiding her, and he had every right to, but she still felt like she needed to say something. She needed to apologise. Something. Abby was gone because of her and she had to try and help the girl’s friend.
Though she wasn't sure if she wanted to do that because she wanted to help, or to make herself feel better.
The first day of training was confusing and overwhelming for the girl from Abnegation whose aptitude was for Amity. She did her best to push Abby’s loss from her mind while she was instructed in how to wield a gun – a gun! – and how to engage someone in unarmed combat. Her heart had been leaping in her chest throughout the entire experience and she again questioned her own sanity. The days following had not been much better.
What was she doing here?! If only she could find her brother she felt like everything would be alright. But the Dauntless instructors would not answer her questions and she had little opportunity up until now to find him herself. Did he know she was here now? Surely he would recognise her name and come to find her?
There was movement out of the corner of her eye. The other initiates were returning from dinner in trickles but many grabbed jackets and ducked back out again. Erika remained sitting where she was on the top bunk of the corner-most bunk bed until the person she was looking for turned up. Erika gave a quick, cursory look around and dropped from the bed onto the floor. They were alone for the time being. She would finally be able to speak to him without anyone else getting in the way or drawing undue attention.
She made her way over, her head down respectfully, as she had been taught in Abnegation. “Umm, excuse me? Diggs? I hope I’m not disturbing you but I… I just wanted to say I am sorry about what happened.” Her hands were still shaking, and she clenched them into the front of her black sweatshirt. Her voice was soft as if she were afraid it would disturb the air around her, again, another trait ingrained in her from her faction of origin.

Colton grabbed some of that Dauntless cake; he was having a good week. His tattoo had fully healed, he got a visit from Emerie and he was now in first place amongst the initiates. He could do for spoiling himself for the evening, he sat down by himself and enjoyed every sliver of it. As he finished he saw the rest of his initiation class were heading back to the dorms, probably to suit up and go train some more. Diggs was taking the night off, maybe get a nap or whatnot. As he followed the group back to the dorms is mind went to another world. He sat down on his bed and let his mind wander.
Abby filled his mind always especially when it was quiet and he had no stresses entering his mind. Though he didn’t particularly like the idea of Emerie in Dauntless, he understood what she was doing. She needed to be here, to be where she belonged. Quite like him she wanted to prove that she could do it, that she could be the best. They both had that drive to be the best, to live for Abigail. He smiled as he undid his shoes and slid them under his bed. As he went to spin onto the bed, he heard someone approaching. When she spoke his smile faded. He knew the voice and it was the last one he wanted to hear right now.
Erika, the Stiff who dropped Abby. The reason the love of his life was dead and he was so alone in this faction. He had never been one for the word hate but this stiff. This weakling standing behind him, he hated her. Loathed her. Despised her. As he had never felt before.
He heard her words and his eyes rolled immediately, an apology. This was the first time he’d ever heard of an apology-for-killing-your-girlfriend. It was interesting to say the absolute least. He sighed and then turned to face her, a fake smile plastered onto his face. “Well now that makes everything okay, thanks for that stiff” He shook his head, turned away from her again and went into his duffel bag, grabbing a cut off t-shirt. He ripped off his dirty shirt and then put this on instead. He was ready for this conversation to end before it started.

Erika pressed her lips together to hold in the comment that wanted to escape in response to his words.
Sarcasm is self-indulgent.
It was, but Diggs wouldn’t care about that. He wasn’t Abnegation, had never been Abnegation and now they were both Dauntless. It did confirm however that he was angry at her for what happened. Guilt curled itself in her gut as she watched him turn away and rummage through his duffel bag. Was he actually looking for something or was it simply a distraction? Erika swallowed.
To say that Diggs intimidated her was an understatement. In fact, most of the Dauntless initiates and the Dauntless intimidated her. They were so… aggressive and direct. It was not something she was used to and certainly not something she had an aptitude for. But she also didn’t want to end up Factionless, so she had to learn to be more like them. Which meant right now that she couldn’t just leave. She had something to say, so even if it was upsetting him, she had to say it. She had to be selfish and she had to be aggressive.
She was going to die.
Tucking a lock of dark hair behind her ear, she cleared her throat. Her feet remained rooted where she stood.
“I know it doesn’t. But I swear if I could have done more at the time I would have.” Damn it, were her hands still shaking? Erika, don’t let go! The words echoed in her mind, making her shiver. She swallowed again and clenched her fists harder in her sweat shirt. “I can’t think of anything that would make it better but… I just wanted you to know I guess, that I liked her, she seemed really nice. S-she died because I couldn’t hold tightly enough and I’m so very sorry.” There really wasn’t anything else she could say or do now. He would forgive her or he wouldn’t, that choice was out of her hands. A kind person would forgive, but the Dauntless were not kind.
She took a step back, letting her gaze slide to the floor again when he stripped off his shirt. Her cheeks flushed slightly. “I’ll…” … leave you alone. She stopped talking, clenching her teeth together. She wasn’t making this situation any better and she was better off leaving the poor man alone. “I’m sorry,” she whispered again and turned to make a quick retreat from the dormitories. She didn’t have the luxury of nights off. She didn’t want to be Factionless, so she had to learn to be as fearless and strong as the Dauntless.

Diggs pulled the shirt over his head and cracked his neck. He felt all the muscles in his body tensing as she continued to speak. He wasn’t going to turn to look at her, he wasn’t sure he could restrain himself from hurting her if he did. The small Stiff was the reason behind his pain and one day they would call his name with hers for a battle. He would end her right there and then, no doubt would be left. But he had to wait, for that moment in front of all the initiates. He wanted to embarrass her, to let everyone know that he would show mercy to no one, no matter guy or girl, big or small, fighter or wimp, he would destroy everyone in his path and he would be the best of them all. One by one, he would pass them all the leaderboards and make it known. He was already at number three and a good fight or two and he could easily find himself back on top.
He listened as she continued on, apologizing and apologizing. Trying to justify what happened, trying to rid herself of guilt. She hadn’t taken kindly to his sarcastic comment, not that he gave a rat’s ass what she preferred. She was scum and didn’t deserve to be here, if it wasn’t for Abby this Stiff would never have jumped off the train. She was a coward and it cost Abby her life, Diggs would kill this girl to return the favor. Being factionless was too good for this coward.
Diggs shook those thoughts away, no matter what had happened he wasn’t a killer. A fighter sure but he was not someone to take a life. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, the Stiff had finished what she was saying and now she was walking away. He spun and watched her walking quickly. “That’s it huh? She seemed nice. You have no idea who she is, who she was.” He spoke with a venom in his voice, ready to scream at her. “Your apology wont bring her back”
