Diggs was pretty comfortable, he had just put in a good workout and took a cold shower, it was the best way to cool off after training. He looked at his hands which were calloused and bruised, he had taken it to the bag pretty hard this morning. He was lying down in his bed, his arm covering his eyes. He had only managed to put on black shorts since his shower, he had no need for a shirt at the moment so why bother. He let his mind take him away from here, away from the darkness of his new home. To a world with Abigail, bright colors, the sun on their back and her smiling face looking back at him. As he drifted into this world, he was filled with happiness like he hadn’t felt in the weeks since her death. He was content to live in his own mind, because at least she was there. His hand instinctively went to his chest where the necklace used to hang and instead found his fingers tracing the outline of his tattoo. His first, which he had gotten just a few weeks prior, a replica of the necklace which now wrapped around his heart. He missed her every second of the day but she was with him now, permanently. He sometimes spoke to her in these dreams but today she was quiet. They stood there hand in hand and enjoyed the day, until suddenly she turned to him, a smile on her face. Then she began to scream his name, like she had as she fell. Over and over again, shaking his arms as she did it. He yelled “Stop” and reached out for her. When his eyes fluttered he realized he was holding Parker Evans by the throat, he had been calling his name and trying to wake him up, and now Diggs was strangling him. Parker tried to speak but Diggs tightened his grip. “What did I tell you about calling me that?” Parker struggled to answer him, rolling his eyes to inform Diggs that he couldn’t breathe. Diggs released him with a push and leaned up, rubbing his eyes. “What do you want Evans?” Parker rubbed his throat, god this dude was strong. They had grown up together but all of a sudden it was like Colton was from another planet, his strength was out of this world. He coughed a few times and then shook his head, Colton had warned him a few times about calling him by his name, he was trying to leave that life behind him. “Sorry, but it’s urgent. You have a visitor here.” He spoke quickly, though it still hurt from the previous threat. Colton raised his eyebrows at his fellow initiate, Parker had always been a bit of a weakling and he was pretty sure he could snap him in half without even trying. “Evans, what the hell are you talking about. What visitor?” His family would never come see him and he had no other friends from his time in Erudite, it had been him and Abigail that was it. Who would come see him? Parker smiled sheepishly, he probably should have just came out and said who it was but he wasn’t sure how Diggs would react. “Col…Diggs, its Emerie. She’s here. By the chasm” Colton heard him, but his mind didn’t register. Emerie? Here? Why? How? He quickly got up and started running towards the exit. Before stopping and pointing to his shirt on the edge of the bed, Parker looked at him quizzically before understanding at firing at him. He put it on mid-sprint. Emeries was here. A smile crept across his face as he took off towards the Chasm, as he approached he could see her. Standing there, waiting for him. He continued to run, but slowed himself. He wanted to run and hug her, but he wasn’t sure what the protocol was. So he walked slower, pulling the smile from his face. “Emerie Calderone.”

Emerie recognized the boy that ran off to get Colton. She didn't remember his name, but she knew he had been Erudite, seeing as he was present as one of the kids choosing the same day Colton and Abigail was. Waiting for Colton wasn't too bad, she had a lot on her mind anyhow, and she knew he'd come eventually. Abby's death would probably still be affecting him by now. She was still upset about it but she had managed to come out of her room long enough to be productive. And now she was here, and she had a lot to say. She wasn't sure how Colton would respond, but she had to let him know her plans.
She would've preferred to have gotten here the Dauntless way, but that probably wouldn't of been the brightest idea. Even if it was the boring way, it was safer to the say the least. When she had arrived, she hadn't imagined to have been spotted right away, and within a few minutes she suddenly saw Colton approaching. She matched his smile with her own - it was good to see him again. Seeing him made her think of Abby, but she quickly set that thought aside. She had come to see for a different reason, but Abby was apart of it.
"Colton!" her voice rang as she walked up towards him. He didn't hug her, but she guessed it was because he was Dauntless now. "It's good to see you." Maybe they were to brave to hug? It sounded a little silly to her but they might've taken it seriously here. "I apologize for coming on short notice." she began, though to be honest she wasn't really sorry but it was the polite thing to say. "I just needed to see you." Not that her parents would be too happy that she just walked off Erudite property and headed to the Dauntless compound but she'd sort that out later.
Colton was the only person she could talk to about this, and she had finally decided to tell him her decision. It hadn't been an easy one, but she knew she had to do this for Abby. She was ready right now but her birthday hadn't come yet, so for now she'd have to wait. What she had to say wouldn't, or she wouldn't be here right now. She had made the decision right after her grieving period. Abby was still fresh on her mind, but at some point she had to move on. Maybe after choosing day…maybe after accomplishing initiation for Abby, maybe someday.

As he approached she finally turned his way, he spoke first but her voice rang out over his. Speaking a name he had been running from, a name he had been hiding from and yet here it was. Following him at every turn, always ready to remind him of who he had been, who he was trying to forget. He loved Abigail with all his heart and in a lot of ways the young brunette in front of him was as much his family as she was Abby’s. He was so happy to see her and by her reaction, she was just as excited to see him. At first he held off from hugging her, out of some weird worry that she would hate him. That she might blame him for her sister’s death, hate him for letting her die. But there was none of that, just joy and excitement to see her. As she finished speaking, he took the last few steps to her and hugged her. Holding her tight and strong, wanting to keep her safe from this world and all of it’s pain.
Maybe in some ways he was looking for that same shelter in her but he would never admit that. He was Diggs, a strong fighter who was in the top three in his class, an animal through and through. There was little left of the man named Colton. Which reminded him. “It is so great to see you!” He paused and just looked at her. “Em. I need you to do me a favor though, no colton. I’m just Diggs now. Ok?” It seemed silly to request her call him by a different name just because he was hiding it in here. But he was building a name for himself, he didn’t need anyone finding out any more about him, dredging up old memories.
He smiled at her and then looked around, people didn’t always take too kindly to strangers especially in the Dauntless compound. “We should probably take this somewhere else so you don’t get into any trouble for being here.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her slowly behind him. He found an abandoned corridor and pulled them in together. He hugged her again, god he had missed her. They had always gotten along so well, during the entire time that he had dated Abby, he and Em had always hit it off. “It’s great to see you, but whats so urgent Em?”

Emerie wasn't sure what to expect when she had first stepped onto the Dauntless compound. But Colton was here, so she was sure everything would be okay. It made her feel better when he finally hugged her though - so she guessed Dauntless hugged people after all. She hugged him right back, and smiled - she hadn't smiled this much since Abby and Colton's choosing day. She kept smiling though - she didn't want to lose this moment. Colton was basically her brother and after Abby died…she felt like he was all she had anymore.
After Colton pulled away, she could see he was just as happy to see her as she was to see him. “Em. I need you to do me a favor though, no colton. I’m just Diggs now. Ok?” Diggs? She had never called him Diggs before, he had always been Colton. Why the sudden interest in changing it? Not unless…well it might've been for Abby, but she didn't quite understand that. Colton was Colton, and she would never see him as anyone else. "You'll always be Colton to me." she answered, watching him with an inquisitive gaze.
"We should probably take this somewhere else so you don’t get into any trouble for being here.” She was suddenly being tugged somewhere else, but her eyes wandered around the compound before being pulled into an empty corridor. She could tell he was only trying to keep her safe - that was typical Colton. Though she wasn't afraid of Dauntless, even after Abby died. After the second hug, she did feel a little more secure though. “It’s great to see you, but whats so urgent Em?” Ah so now it was time for the big moment of truth.
She placed her hands together and glanced straight at Colton before deciding to speak. "I plan on leaving Erudite after choosing day, I'm going to transfer." she began, deciding to ease her way into it. It had been a rather big decision - not many people transferred. "Colton…" Ah well, she was still going to call him that whether he liked it or not. It was his name and she would be the last person on earth to forget it. "I want to join Dauntless."

Diggs should have expected she would say no, that she would continue to call him Colton. She didn’t understand the way things worked around here. That being no one, being connected to no one, no family or friends, just you was the best way to make it through the initiation. No weakness to exploit, no one to protect. Colton had spent years protecting Abby and Em from well anything and everything that Erudite had to offer. So falling books in the library were on probation from Colton, he could be called over protective at times but he cared about those he loved. Those two fell under that jurisdiction. He shook his head at her but he understood. “Of course I will, but here they don’t know who I am, they don’t know a Colton.” It was hard to explain, that he was someone else. That he hid his true self to survive, to succeed.
As he pulled her away, his eyes scanned to see if anyone had caught sight of them she could be in a lot of trouble. Crossing factions was a no-no and Dauntless really didn’t take the rule lightly. Not even a little. They seemed to go pretty unnoticed, Emerie luckily wasn’t from Amity whose colors were beyond bright, they were piercing. The dark blue blended well amongst the black in the poor lighting. As they pulled apart from the second hug and he asked her question, she shelled up. Like she had bad news or was worried about telling him something. Either way he didn’t like where this was going.
When she spoke her first sentence, he smiled and nodded. He always liked when people left home when they felt they didn’t belong and Emerie fit that category, she was meant for something so much more than the Erudite labs or classrooms. He spoke softly. “That’s great Em” Then she continued on. She spoke his name again, to which he shook his head again and then she said it. Something he was not prepared for, something he hadn’t anticipated. Dauntless. She was going to come here, to the place of her sister’s death. The smile faded from his face, he opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. He turned from her, walking a few steps before walking back to her. He only said two words, but it was important. He needed to understand, why she would choose here? Of all places. “For who?”

She listened quietly to what he had to say, raising an eyebrow in confusion. They didn't know a Colton? Her eyes clouded for a moment. Why not? "So you use this moniker…to impress your friends?" That couldn't be the reason, she had never seen him as the type to do that. "Or…are you trying to be someone else?" Maybe Abby's death had affected him more than she realized, but still…Emerie didn't know Diggs. Colton would always be how she knew him, and she could imagine calling him Diggs. It didn't sound right, it just made him sound foreign - and Emerie needed him to be familiar right now.
After being pulled into the hallway, she knew she had to tell him then. And after she spoke, she felt as if a weight had been lifted of her shoulders. However, the smiling face that she saw a moment earlier didn't seem to be their anymore. "For who?" Well she had to explain herself at some point - he did deserve to have reasoning behind. Letting out a breath, she responded. "For Abby, For me. After she…" She still couldn't admit it out loud, but it seemed obviously what she was going to say, so she continued on past that. She had put a lot of thought into her decision after all so she might as well be honest with him.
"I want to prove that a person from my family can become Dauntless. Because becoming Dauntless makes me feel closer to Abby and to you. Back in Erudite…I have nothing." She didn't even know her parents anymore…ever since Abby's death they were more focused on having her study than anything. Em couldn't do that, it was her life and she wasn't going to spend it behind a desk all day or becoming the doctor or the researcher her parents had always pictured her and her sister becoming. They were different, and so she would follow in Abby's footsteps and make her life among the brave.
Her eyes flickered as she stared back at Colton - searching his face for some kind of response. He was probably worried that what happened to Abby might happen to her, but Emerie wasn't scared. She was going to take on the initiation full force and make him proud…to make Abby proud. She had been hoping for some support - since she knew her parents would never approve, but she wasn't sure if he was going to give her that. That wouldn't stop her though, she knew she could do it. And she was going prove to him too if she had to. "I can do it." her voice was a little shrill now, by now she was trying to calm herself down. She wasn't angry with him, but she just hoped he understood.

Colton heard her words, if he was trying to impress someone. He shook his head as she continued on, asking him about why he was no longer answering to Colton. It was something he had been thinking about since that day, the images haunted him every night. Colton jumping ahead of her, walking towards the ledge that would eventually lead him down to the Dauntless compound, he didn’t look back for her. He didn’t check to make sure that she had no problem like he had, that she and the stiff had both made it. Then he heard it, his name being screamed out. Pure panic filling his heart as he heard her cry out. It was the noise he heard when he laid his head down to sleep, when he closed his eyes. He wasn’t trying to impress, or pretend to be someone else. He just was someone else, Someone running from that name. But right here, with Emerie, she knew him and she wouldn’t let him run. “No, no its nothing like that.” He paused trying to gather his thoughts. “When you join Dauntless they ask for your name, whatever you say is your name. No questions. No changing it. In here I’m Diggs.” He was firm about it, especially the ending. He wanted her to understand how it worked here, why he was doing what he was doing.
His mind was still reeling, trying to understand how she could think this was a good idea. He didn’t want to imagine Emerie in the midst of the fighting rankings, having to see her bloodied and bruised. Having to fight every day just to prove she belonged, he couldn’t stand to see her hurting. As he spoke his question, he tried to answer it himself but he came up empty. He awaited her response, staring at her. He remembered her as the little girl when he had Abby had first started dating and now here she was ready to declare her faction.
He listened intently, trying to keep relatively calm. He didn’t like this at all but on a deeper level, he understood. His fingers slowly worked their way to his chest and he felt the outline of his tattoo again, he carried her with him in every step of the day. Making decisions based on whether or not she would approve. Determined to be the absolute best for her, everything he did was for her. He cracked his neck and turned his back to her, walking in circles. He crossed her a few times, unsure what to say or what to do. He heard her speak again, reassuring him that she could do it. He stopped where he was and turned to face her, and in two steps grabbed her and pulled her into a hug. “I know you can, I know.” He pulled away and grabbed the hemming of his shirt. “I want to show you this.” He rolled it up until you could see the tattoo in full, it was her necklace wrapped around his heart. “I carry her with me. Every day. I may be Diggs now, but everything I do is for her” He smiled at her, his eyes fight back the newly formed water.

Emerie stared back at Colton, her brown eyes flickering and she studied the expression his face. Both of her suggestions didn't sound like something he would do. He had always content with himself, something she had always admired about him. It had to go deeper than thought, and she was beginning to realize it might've been because of what happened to Abby. "I see. What an interesting tradition. Maybe I'll join in on it someday." she answered, before offering him a curt nod. That didn't mean she was agreeing to calling him Diggs though, it was merely in response to his explanation. Not that she was into openly defying people, Emerie just couldn't see him as anybody else but she was beginning to understand why he wanted to be Diggs.
The conversation seemed to go on from there, and after explaining what she had intended to do, the young girl felt a huge weight lift off her shoulders. She would be here during the next Dauntless initiation, and she was fully prepared to be accepted into Dauntless then. She wasn't afraid of anything she had seen of it so far - the lure of danger was enough to keep her entranced by the beauty of bravery. It must've been what Abigail saw in Dauntless - endless adventure and the freedom to be as crazy as you wanted to be. It was exactly where Emerie wanted to be once it was time and she couldn't wait to leave Erudite. Though she would miss her parents, this was where she believed she belonged.
When he hugged again, she smiled, relieved that this was all out into the open. When he pulled away, she watched him curiously as he revealed a tattoo to her. She froze for a moment, realizing it was a tattoo of her sister's necklace. Her right hand flew upwards to cover her mouth as tears began to appear in her own eyes. She licked her lips, pressing them together in a thin line as she nodded, a smile slowly appearing on her face. "Abby..." she whispered softly as her hand lowered from her face before nodding to Colton. "Do you think…do you think she's happy where she is now?" Emerie wasn't that religious of a person, but she had believed in an afterlife. And she had always thought it was filled with sunshine and happiness, but after Abby died, she wasn't so sure of that anymore.

He followed her eyes as they studied his expression, Emerie was perceptive, always had been. He hoped that she would understand the importance of his name, he had buried Colton long ago but he wasn’t so sure the she would allow that. And maybe he was beginning to forget why he had wanted that in the first place, Abby would want him to succeed but at what cost. If he wasn’t the man that she had loved then what would be the point. Could he be Diggs and still be someone that Abby would have loved? He would try, he would succeed. He had to. The young brunette nodded her approval, much like her sister used to when she understood but didn’t like it. She wasn’t going to stop calling him Colton, he could see it in her. He rolled his eyes at her when she said she would join the tradition, she didn’t understand all the dangers of this place and he couldn’t bear to see her suffer that way. He couldn’t protect her here, from the fighting and whatever the 2nd round of initiation held in store for the Dauntless.
After he released her from the hug, she seemed to breathe again. Clearly she had worried about his reaction, understandably so. No brother wants this life for his little sister, but she had to do what was right for her and being somewhere you belonged is something he understood better than anyone. He had spent years and years knowing he was in the wrong place. Had it not been for Abby he would have surely lost his mind or left for the factionless, at least there he could get rid of the daily tortures of the Erudite. Colton was brilliant and just simply lacked that desire, that desire to know more and more and more. He was quite content learning on the fly, learning what he needed and letting it sit at that moment. The Erudite always pushed and it drove him away, permanently.
As the tattoo revealed under his shirt, he saw tears forming in Emerie’s eyes and he closed his eyes briefly, continuing the push to fight off his own. As her face turned from shock to sadness to a small smile, Colton felt himself going through those same emotions and one tear took off down his cheek. He didn’t wipe it away, he wasn’t ashamed of it and he let the trail dry against his tanned cheek. He heard her question and it froze him. He had thought about her a lot but never where she was now, always memories and the wanting of her next to him. When he had worn himself so badly in training he swore he could see her, a hallucination but enough to help him get up and keep going. He returned her smile and it was a true smile, something that only Abby and Emerie could truly distinguish the difference between real and fake. “Your sister, did you ever know her not to be happy. She couldn’t keep a damn smile off her face if you tried” It came off with a joking tone, but it was the truth she had been and was still the happiest person Diggs had ever known. He missed that smile, the grace and the pure joy that she brought him.
