Adelaide was in her element...working with people. She enjoyed listening to others, validating thoughts and making people feel better. No, she was not a doctor she couldn't heal wounds or broken bones, but she did heal minds. She healed emotions and cared for the mental stability of others. It was something she never expected. Growing up she was never allowed to care for others, she was never allowed to ask people how they felt or if they were sad. She was forced to ignore and shut off her emotions and ignore the emotions of others. Her father told her growing up that emotions were weakness. Despite all of the teaching it was something she was never good at. She always found herself wanting to talk to others, wanting to alleviate their stress and fears. When she chose Amity her world shifted. She was welcomed with open arms, literally. She was shocked as strangers pulled her into a hug and didn't let go. It wasn't a brief hug for show it was a real, true, meaningful hug. She could tell in that one instant that these people truly cared for her. She was shown where she would be staying, and who her bunk mates were. They all talked and shared. It was like she finally felt free. She finally felt like she belonged, and finally in a place that she could flourish. Later on she was the one who approached the elder counselors and asked to be trained. She had watched them help her fellow Amity, and even other factions deal with their emotions. She watched how much they cared and worked to ease the pain of those they were helping. She wanted to do that, she wanted to be like them. The training had been going on for a few months and she happily found she had a knack for it. Sometimes there were bad days, sometimes she was yelled at, screamed at, cussed at. Sometimes people pushed her away, refusing to let her in but she continued with it. She persevered through the days with doubt and the days that were tough. She sometimes even silently thanked her father and mother for instilling determination in her, there wasn't much Dauntless left in her, but determination was there. She found herself today at the school. She had shifted her training from adults to children in the past few weeks. She wanted to compare the two, and find out which one she was better with. So far it looked like the adults would be her main focus. Whenever she worked with the children she found herself encouraging them to share and feel which with the Amity was natural, but others like the Dauntless children ( and their adults ) refused. It was hard on her to watch kids fight and suppress their emotions. She could practically see the adults they would become and wanted them to dig deeper to see if it was someone they wanted to be or who their parents expected them to be. It was hard pushing those thoughts aside and purely focusing on making sure they were developing normally. She had finished her few hours of training and got her papers signed. Pushing through the doors of the school she walked outside with her notes from the day. The weather was warm and sunny so she changed her plans from going straight back to the Amity sector to taking her time outside in the sunshine. She walked past the statue and made her way to one of the benches out front. She sat down and pulled the notes out, beginning to read them. Word Count: 605 Mood: Happy! Ethan pushed through the doors of his old school and he took a deep breath as he reached the great outdoors of the city. He had spent a good amount of his young life either in these hallways or out in the city serving the factionless food and clothing. His parents enjoyed their selfless mindset of the Abnegation which led him to have no idea what to do with free time. So unsure of where else to go his Candor elders suggested he go see a counselor since he was a transfer and they felt his transition may be difficult. He couldn’t agree more, his whole life he had been told to keep his mouth closed and listen, and now he was expected to speak his mind with no regard for the others feelings.
To say the meeting had gone poorly was an understatement, he had agreed with his elders that he could use some help with the adjustment but for an Amity man to tell him that he understood and psychological crap was just ridiculous. He blasted open the doors with a strong push and yelped as they opened. He was happy to be free and planned on enjoying the rest of his day, but doing what? He wasn’t sure, his whole life had been planned for him up until now, what did he like to do. Did he sing? Dance? Paint? Run? Write? He wasn’t sure, life was so different now.
He fixed his tie and lined the rest of his suit up along his body. It still felt weird compared to his rags that he was used to. He pulled a small black mirror out of his pocket and fixed his hair. Ethan had decided after his defection that he would enjoy the simple things that he had been deprived of, this was one of those acts. As he placed the mirror back into his suit pocket, he saw a pretty blonde sitting by herself on the bench in front of the school.
Flirt? Sure maybe that was what Ethan did. He fixed his tie again, something that was becoming a bit of a habit for him and approached her. As he got closer, he could see that she was Amity, hell she was probably another of the counselors that he could have seen today. “Well aren’t you a sight for sore eyes, do you mind if I sit?” he gestured to the rest of the bench that she was sitting on and sat before he got an answer. “Name is Roy. Well Ethan, Ethan Roy. Candor. Obviously you can see my clothes. And you are…Well other than Amity, I can tell because of your outfit” He had a feeling he could ramble for days and his new faction would let him, as long as he told the truth. Something he was extremely excited about, this new life of his could be fun.

Addi was deep into reading her notes. She was thinking about the last child she spoke to. It was a little girl who was abnegation and she had wanted to paint her nails like the candor girls did. Her mother had refused and told her why and the child had retaliated. She had taken crayons and colored all over the walls of her bedroom. The other counselors all agreed it was simply an act of misplaced anger and that it showed the child might have tendencies towards dauntless but Adelaide saw more there. The child had reacted in a bad manor yes, but exactly how she had reacted showed more. The little girl had grabbed colors and marked her room with them, she had turned her gray bedroom into a bright, vivid room. She had created color in her world which was what the original argument had been about in the first place. Adelaide didn't see the girl as a future dauntless, she saw her as a child needing to express herself and be free. She was a child who needed to live through the bright reds and yellows and greens that she created. She was a future Amity, maybe Adelaide could see it so quickly because that used to be her. She used to be stuck somewhere she didn't belong. It was hard not to reach out to the girl, promise her there was more to life than those gray walls. Adelaide had just written some notes down on the page when a guy spoke. “Well aren’t you a sight for sore eyes, do you mind if I sit?”
Before Addi could answer he sat down on the bench near her. She barely had time to register what he was doing when he spoke again. “Name is Roy. Well Ethan, Ethan Roy. Candor. Obviously you can see my clothes. And you are…Well other than Amity, I can tell because of your outfit” She raised her eyebrow and watched him go on and on. When he paused to take a breath she laughed lightly. It was so unexpected. She had just been involved in a world of forced futures and seriousness when out of the blue a boy sits down and starts rambling on. If she had been back in Daunltess she might have been encouraged to push him off the bench, but she thought it was funny. He was a nice distraction from her day, plus he was cute which certainly didn't hurt anything. She smiled happily " Nice to meet you Ethan Roy from Candor...I'm Adelaide." She extended her hand out to shake his, which she knew was a Candor thing. Her elders made sure all of the counselors were well versed in the different factions. Candors greeted with handshakes, Erudite with a quick nod, Abnegation with a head bow, Dauntless with glares ( though that was mostly a joke). The training was made to make everyone feel a little more relaxed when talking to them. It was like learning a nation's language before you visited there. " And yes...Amity. " She glanced at her jeans and yellow top, nothing revealing, but nothing stuffy either. It was perfect, at least for her. She would hate to be forced to wear dressy clothes or all black every day for the rest of her life. She liked the bright yellows and passionate reds. She liked that if she chose to wear blue or gray her faction wouldn't hate her either. They were free to chose, free to express themselves. " So what are you up to on this beautiful sunny day? Other than meeting strangers on benches of course.." She smiled again. |

Ethan even through all of his talking was paying close attention to the beautiful blonde he was sharing a bench with. She had raised her eyebrows at one point which Ethan took as a bad sign but right before she responded she let out a soft laugh and then gave him a big smile. All of which seemed like good signs, at least to Ethan they did. Then she put out her hand, for a handshake.
A week prior and he would have just bowed, even with her hand outstretched. Abnegation avoided contact altogether unless it was absolutely necessary, which in this case it wasn’t. But he also was no longer in Abengation, he was in Candor where they shake hands and he was petrified he was going to screw it up. But all the same he quickly mimicked her actions, angling his arm the same as her and took her hand in his. He shook firm but not too hard, he didn’t want the girl thinking he was trying to hurt her. Then he let go after what seemed like the appropriate amount of time. “Pleasure is entirely mine. Wow Adelaide, what a beautiful name that is.” He had had never heard that name before and he, in keeping with his new faction, was being honest. It truly was a beautiful name, all the names in Abnegation were so plain and boring.
He followed her eyes as she examined her clothes that he had just mentioned. Very typical of Amity. She was dressed comfortably and with bright colors, all of which seemed to match her underlying personality. He heard her question and responded with a smile. “Honestly this is the first time I’ve done something like this, like ever. It’s been quite the success, I’ll have to do things like this more often. But I honestly came her for an appointment with a counselor, y’know to help with my transfer. Oh right I transferred from Abnegation. I get it I’m a stiff, yada yada yada. I’ve heard it all before. But anyway I got some guy with his own agenda, telling me he understands. Yet when I asked him what faction he was originally from, he told me he was a lifelong Amity. Like really? Seriously? You have no idea.” His mouth stopped moving long enough to be remember who he was talking to. His lip curled up like he was ripping off a Bandaid. “Please, please, please tell me you aren’t a counselor.” He paused, sort of. “You are! Aren’t you? God I’m an idiot, I knew this whole thing was going to get my in trouble, all of the talking. All of the honesty…Yeah I’m gonna stop now” He smiled sheepishly, and hoped Adelaide wasn’t one to be easily offended.

Adelaide shook his hand and noticed that his actions were stiff and it didn't seem natural. She wondered if she did something wrong, but before she could ask he mentioned that her name was beautiful. It completely caught her off guard and she felt the heat rush to her cheeks. Never in her life had anyone said her name was anything close to beautiful. In her old life it was the opposite. She had been picked on continually because she had a "girly" name to match her "girly" aka: weak personality. She never thought of her name as pretty, it was just another thing that made her stand out.
“Honestly this is the first time I’ve done something like this, like ever. It’s been quite the success, I’ll have to do things like this more often.
She was happily pleased that he thought their conversation was a success. She did too, which was a little surprising. It was one thing to meet a total stranger and have a good conversation, it was a whole other when that stranger was a Candor and you were an Amity. She had been told repeatedly by her elder counselors that the Candor were the only faction who didn't trust them. They were the only faction who thought the Amity was hiding something and had ulterior motives. They all warned her that the Candor members probably would not listen much to her, but she had been pleasantly surprised with how well this conversation was going. When he mentioned that he was an Abnegation transfer and brought up the word stiff she tried interjecting before he continued, " No, no, no, I would never call you.." before she could finish her sentence he went on talking. "But anyway I got some guy with his own agenda, telling me he understands. Yet when I asked him what faction he was originally from, he told me he was a lifelong Amity. Like really? Seriously? You have no idea.”
Amity...like herself. She tried not to let her feelings get too hurt. It wasn't that he had a problem with the whole faction, it was just that one counselor. She could even see his point. The Amity counselor had never been in Abnegation, he had no idea what that felt like to grow up so no, he didn't have that history but he could still help. They were trained to help others through it, and help in the only way they knew how. No, she might not know what it feels like for Abnegation in particular, but she did know what it felt like to finally be free. She knew what it felt like to have your whole family abandon you.
She quietly moved the papers from her lap and slipped them into her bag. She watched as his face slowly registered. “Please, please, please tell me you aren’t a counselor.” She smiled a little and watched as he immediately began backpedaling and got flustered " “You are! Aren’t you? God I’m an idiot, I knew this whole thing was going to get my in trouble, all of the talking. All of the honesty…Yeah I’m gonna stop now” She couldn't help it, she burst out laughing, he was just too adorable, and the situation was so awkward it was hilarious. She put her hand on his shoulder, " It's ok, really. I get it." She removed her hand and turned on the bench so she was facing him squarely. " How about we try this again.....hi Ethan, I'm Adelaide from Amity. I was originally from Dauntless so if you say anything bad about Amity again I'll kick your butt." She smiled playfully and hoped it would diffuse some of the awkward tension. It wasn't true that she could kick his butt, although there was some Dauntless training deep down. There would always be of course, the training started when she was a child, she couldn't just forget it. She didn't think she would ever forget it, no matter how much she wanted to, but she also doubted she could win in any fight with him. He was taller and she didn't have that in her anymore. She spoke again " So....Abnegation to Candor, quite a leap. I'm guessing you've kept a lot inside over the years." She smiled again and wondered how someone with that much to say could have kept so quiet for so long.

Ethan still had his face in his hand, only he could talk his way into insulting someone multiple times in under two minutes. He sighed into his hands and then heard her make a noise. Was she laughing? What about what he just said was funny? He had insulted her, accidently of course but nonetheless why was she laughing. Then he felt her hand on his shoulder and he wasn’t sure what to expect next. Was she going to scold him? What was an Amity punishment for insulting them? Shame because he already felt that pretty heavy and wasn’t sure he could take much more. His face had already turned nine shades of red at this point, he wasn’t sure they went to another color.
When she spoke it felt like a giant weight was lifted off of his chest, which is good because he couldn’t lift a real one and he wasn’t sure he could carry the figurative one around with him. He took a deep breath and took in what she was saying. He watched with interest as she squared her shoulders with his and he smiled gently at her, she really was beautiful. Then she explained that she like him was a transfer, but Dauntless. “Hi Adelaide and point taken.” He grinned at her, he wasn’t scared of the petite girl in front of him but he would also do his best not to insult her faction. Though in backtracking he was pretty sure that she was kidding anyway.
She asked him about his transfer and he nodded along with her. It was a huge difference and he was keeping a lot inside, not being allowed to talk except for the specified times of day. Spending most of the day listening to others, to help them with their problems. He was reprimanded by his parents on an almost hourly basis, life at home was miserable for him. His parents loved him but wanted him to be like them and in the end he just wasn’t. Ethan was born to be in Candor and there was no question about that. “You could say that. My parents don’t get it, which is ironic because they are supposed to be selfless, so wouldn’t they support me and not be so selfish, which is all that being upset with me is. I didn’t leave because I don’t love them, I left because for once in my life I made a decision that would make me happy.” He sighed loudly, trying to catch his breath. Something he never had to worry about it in Abnegation, he rarely needed that much air. Look at him being selfish again and hogging the air, tough crap.
“Wait you said Dauntless? Wow talk about a leap. Never would have guessed that. What was that like? Dauntless I mean? Well I guess transferring to, that must have been wild?” He paused for a second. “Guess it would make it easier for you to answer if I stopped talking huh?” He smiled at her and put his hand over his mouth, more for theatrics than for actual necessity. Though he wasn’t all that confident in his ability to shut up for too long.

She noticed he was blushing from embarrassment and she was glad she had turned the situation to something humorous. It was clear that he didn't meant anything hurtful he just spoke without thinking. He was obviously embarrassed enough at his own mistake so she didn't need to say anything further about it. Not that she ever would have. It was nice to see a guy clearly embarrassed and not trying to hide it. You would have thought in Dauntless if a male showed even the slightest bit of emotion he would have exploded. She returned his grin and listened as he began telling her about his old life.
She smiled a little when he spoke about his parents. They were clearly in the same boat, although where his seemed to be upset that he chose another faction hers were upset because she hadn't turned out right. She thought a moment about what he said and it did make sense. For two people who devote their whole lives to serving others you would think they would want their son to be happy. You would think that they would push their own feelings aside for the sake of his feelings. People were odd though, they did things and turned out way you sometimes would have never seen coming.
" Yea, that is a little odd. I would have thought Abnegation parents would want happiness from their children even at the sake of their own happiness. I suppose their only human though....I think people like to think of themselves as making the right choices for both them and their family, and when someone steps up and chooses another way of life feelings are hurt. I'd like to think that it's more an issue of thinking that we believe they're wrong rather than them hating our life choices. I'm sure they know you love them."
She hadn't meant to go on about it, but she was working through similar issues and it was easy to get carried away. She had found herself wondering if her parents had ever went to counseling, if they knew that her choices weren't about them. She was different because she was a human being entitled to be different, it was nothing they could have changed or done different. It was hard knowing your parents weren't happy with the way you turned out, but she was working through it. When he mentioned making himself happy she nodded.
" Which is something you deserve. We're only given this one life...we should have some say in how we live it. Life kind of isn't worth living if you're not happy right? What would the point be?"
She didn't mean that all of life is happy. There were thousands of times when she was sad or angry, but overall her life was heading in the direction she wanted it to go. She was happy in her choices and her new life. Sure life was going to bring difficulties and hardships, but it was still a happy life. She wasn't forced to be something she isn't. She wasn't forced anymore to be someone that others wanted her to be. She was herself and she was happy. When he asked about her old life she paused for a moment. Where to begin? There was so much she wanted to forget and so much that she hated. She took a deep breath and absentmindedly began playing with the bracelet she was wearing while she spoke.
" Yep...Dauntless. It was...rough. I didn't really fit in and my brother was born to be there so it kind of broke my parent's hearts doubly that I was such a letdown. I guess they were expecting two golden children." She laughed a little and looked back up at him. " I haven't seen them since transferring, I think they were happy to see me go....I love Amity though, it's nice to talk to people without having to size them up for a fight. It's nice to be able to laugh and dance you know?" She smiled happily, she didn't want to bring their conversation down. She was enjoying his company more than she had thought she would have.

He listened as she discussed his parents, which was cool because she seemed to agree with him which was nice. He had never had that either, he was always wrong in his house and it pissed him off to no end. Just because he was young and speaking out of turn, didn’t mean he didn’t know what he was talking about. Hell most of the time he knew more about the whole thing than either of them. But he felt better after hearing her explain what they were doing. It was a defense mechanism for them, they thought they knew best for him and though they didn’t know him as well as they thought he had to smile knowing they cared. “I’m sure you’re right, I guess I just let my feelings get the best of me. Guess that’s what happens when it gets pent up for so long” He paused long and thorough. There was even a moment of silence, he laughed to himself. “Wow that was cool, my mouth decided it didn’t want to ramble, good to know it can do that whole stopping thing” He looked down, very impressed at his mouth’s restraint which he knew really came from his brain but it’s difficult to look impressed at the brain.
She agreed that he should be getting happiness out of life and that it was a major point. He was happy, at least he thought that was what this was. He was smiling and such which was new to him, plus his mirror was also new and he very much enjoyed looking at himself and doing his hair different ways. It was stuff he was never allowed to do, like he assumed all the kids who grew up in candor would lie just for the hell of it upon leaving, he knew he would if given the chance. He wasn’t sick of the honesty but being somewhere you don’t belong with rules that shouldn’t affect you really pissed him off. “Exactly…well apparently that’s all I have to say about that. This honest talking thing is weird. Sometimes I cant stop, other times all I have is a word or a sentence or sometimes two sentences or two words.” He chuckled to himself, there it was the ramble on. Woo.
He was extremely attentive as she discussed life as the dauntless. She had grown up there, this little blonde with the biggest smile had had ever seen. She surely didn’t fit in, how did she even survive that long without someone killing her by accident. The Dauntless were brutal and loved to fight, this girl was neither. He couldn’t even imagine Adelaide throwing a punch, hell he could barely see her slapping someone who actually deserved it. She said that her parents were happy to see her go because her brother was the golden child. “Well that’s their loss, seriously you are everything a parent could want in a daughter, anyone would be happy to call you their daughter. You definitely made that right choice with Amity” He smiled and nodded to her, keeping eye contact throughout. “And no I don’t know what you mean by the way, I’ve never sang or danced. Wasn’t allowed to have fun, remember?” He grinned at her and leaned back from her and swung his arms to his side. Abnegation did not allow dancing, it wasn’t illegal but there was no benefit for others by dancing so none of that or singing or painting or yeah the same last as earlier. God what a bummer Abnegation is, they have no idea what they are missing out in the world.

Adelaide nodded a little, it was nice being able to help someone begin to work out issues. She wished it was as easy as that for herself, she had found that when it came to advice and counsel it was much easier to give it than it was to apply it. She laughed a little when he brought up the pause. He was a talker, that was for sure. She didn't blame him though, she thought it was nice to hear the thoughts going on inside someone's head. It was better than shoving them all inside and pretending they weren't there. He mentioned the rambling and she smiled again. " Maybe you just have to get it all out of your system, especially after having to stay quiet for so long."
She didn't know any other Candors so she wasn't sure if it was normal or not to be speaking so fast. She assumed it was because he was so new, and she couldn't blame him. The first few weeks as an Amity all Adelaide did was sing and laugh. It was liberating to get to do something you had been forbidden to do for so long. It was so freeing to suddenly love to do something that you never even knew you missed.
When Ethan said she was everything someone could have wanted in a daughter she blushed and looked towards the ground. It was the nicest compliment that anyone had ever given her. She spent her whole life thinking she wasn't good enough and to hear someone...a Candor at that...saying that she would make a great daughter was the most meaningful thing he could have said. She smiled up at him " Thank you for that...it means a lot." She wanted to give him a hug, but she was pretty sure he wouldn't be comfortable with that and she didn't want to make him uneasy. Especially since he had just made her whole day. When Ethan mentioned he never danced Adi's eyes widened. " Never danced?!? Really!?! Well.,.that's got to change." She stood up and held her hand out to him " C'mon Ethan...dance with me. It's not hard I promise." She smiled brightly and waited on his reply.

Ethan took a few deep breaths as she spoke, he needed some water or something if he was going to keep talking at this rate. He smiled at her, to return the big one she was giving him. She was beautiful and Ethan found himself studying the smaller, less obvious things about her that really made up her beauty. Her eyes caught his attention since the second he sat down, they were big but not too big. Their color popping, a hazel color he didn’t know even existed. Her clothes were far from revealing but they weren’t the confining clothing like the Abnegation either. (Seriously that place is zero fun, how do people live there forever. Sixteen years was enough. ) Then he found his way to her lips and wow they were big and moving. Shit she was speaking, he totally heard her. At least sort of, luckily his ears were listening and he heard it on the reverb. A psychology term he wasn’t sure why he knew. God even his thoughts were beginning to ramble together. “That’s probably it, this is much more fun but I feel like most people will get easily annoyed. Though you haven’t or at least it doesn’t seem you have yet, so I guess its not that bad.” He hiccupped at the end, and grinned at her.
He spoke the truth when he saw that she would be the perfect daughter, he had to he was candor. Her face immediately blushed which caused him to smile, she seemed to really appreciate it and he could tell right there without her using any words. But of course to keep from being rude, she spoke anyway and reinforced the meaning behind her blushing. “It’s the truth. Obviously” He pointed down to his clothing, to indicate that he was Candor and then grinned at her. “But you are welcome all the same.”
He immediately regretted telling her that he had never danced, he really hadn’t but the way her eyes widened, he knew he was going to regret his little joke. Her response was incredulous and he laughed softly. “What do you mean?” He paused and watched her stand and put out her hand. “No. No. No. No. Here? But I…no…here?” He looked around hesitantly then realized, he didn’t care anymore, he was going to dance with the pretty blonde who he had met on the bench after his horrible meaning and no one was going to stop him. He cleared his throat and shook his head to clear the cobwebs. “I mean of course.” He placed his hand in hers and stood next to her, what did he just agree to?

Adelaide's grin widened as he began refusing. She could relate a little, when the Amity kids had pulled her into a group game she had at first refused. She didn't want to be laughed at. She didn't want her new family to see her being silly and acting ridiculous. It was halfway through her grudgingly accepting the invitation to play that she realized they wouldn't laugh at her and they wanted her to be silly. There was no shame in being silly. She was free to laugh with them and act as silly as she wanted. They weren't going to judge her or demand she act a certain way. She was free to be herself. Now she enjoyed the games and the dancing, she loved watching people use their talents in singing or theater. It was nice to enjoy others without critiquing their every move and motive.
She watched the emotions play over his face and he seemed to have agreed. " That's the spirit" She smiled brightly as the boy placed his hand in hers and stood up from the bench. She nodded a little and wished she had some sort of music. She didn't need it of course, but it did help in keeping rhythm and teaching someone new to dance. She stood in front of him and intertwined their fingers together and held her arm out a little. She put her other hand around his shoulder, keeping them at a friendly and comfortable distance. She didn't notice if anyone was around or watching them. She didn't care if others laughed at her or thought she might be crazy. She was enjoying life and living in the moment. If she would allow herself to actually think about the other she would pity them for not truly living life.
She looked up at him and spoke " Ok, so now you take your other hand and put it around my waist." It was a little odd to ask a stranger to put their hand on you, and she tried not to blush at the thought. It was normal in Amity for a guy to randomly put their arm around her dancing. There was nothing sexual about it. They were all dancing to be dancing and having fun. With Ethan it was a little different. He was completely new at this, a Candor, and basically a total stranger. She hoped that he wouldn't feel embarrassed or unnerved in her asking.
In her old life of Dauntless if a guy dared touch her she would have hit him. That tended to be the only time that she ever acted the way she was expected. She didn't like most of the Dauntless guys, they were rude and loud. They pushed themselves on her which made her hate being around them even more. She had spent her time away from the other Dauntless kids and she never regretted it, if a boy had put their hands on her back then like she was asking Ethan to do now she would have probably put him in some pain. Which was nothing compared to if her brother had seen it happen. She didn't think about any of that though, right now she was enjoying the sunshine, the company, and teaching Ethan something new.

Ethan felt her hand wrap into his and a large smile crossed her face, his face was one of anxiety. He was happy to be here with her, extremely worried about how bad of a dancer he would be and lastly nerves of holding her hand. Growing up in Abnegation, where physical contact only happened when it was extremely necessary, which was nearly never. He looked up at her and saw her eyes, getting lost in them for quite a few seconds. God she was beautiful, for an Amity. He forced his mind to add that last part of the thought, he thought she was beautiful but his faction came first, he finally felt like he was a part of a faction and he couldn’t afford to lose that just yet.
He felt her intertwine her fingers within his and then placed the other over his shoulder. Ethan could hear the murmuring going on around him, people were so confused about what they were doing, his nerves were getting the best of him. He found her eyes again and everyone else could have disappeared, it was just him and her. Her speaking broke him out of his trance and he raised his eyebrows. Finally he did as she asked. Sliding his free hand onto her lower back, there was a lot of space between them and the angles felt pretty awkward but he trusted her.
His hands were where they were supposed to be, but they seemed to be missing music or something to dance to. Besides it still felt kinda awkward to be this far apart with fingers intertwined. He smirked and then moves his hand a bit farther to the left on her waist, giving himself a better grip. He then softly pulled her close. There was still space, just not nearly as much as before. “How’s this?” He now had to hope he wasn’t crossing lines, Ethan was new to this part of the world and unfortunately that meant that he had little to no idea where the line was. “What next teach? Huh?” He grinned and waited to see where things could go in the next few minutes. They could be life changing. Or even crazier, it could be fun.

She smiled encouragingly at him when he seemed to be giving in to her request. She made an effort not to laugh at the awkward position they were holding. It was clear that he had never did this type of thing before. She thought about humming something or maybe singing but then thought it best to teach him some basic moves before she just jumped right in with the rhythm side of things. She again found herself wishing they were near some music, it would have made the lesson a thousand times easier, nevertheless she was happy to be dancing with him. She noticed he was glancing around a little at the people around them, and she figured he was a little embarrassed. She hoped she wasn't pushing him into something he was uncomfortable with, she wanted this to be something fun not scarring or painful.
She felt him put his hand on the lower part of her back and she met his eyes. She was startled a little bit by the intensity that they had, she could tell he was trying hard to make this go smoothly. He had seemed like a ball of energy bouncing from one word to the next when he had first sat down, but now he seemed to be a totally different person. He was more focused, more determined, maybe he needed to be challenged more often she thought to herself, it seemed to suit him well. She was about to tell him to relax and loosen his stance up a bit when he smirked and put his arms further around her and pulled her body closer to his. In seconds they had gone from innocent dancing to something a little bit more. There was still some room of course, they weren't going to get fined in the streets for an indecent display or anything, but she was closer to him than any other boy she had ever danced with before.
She looked into his now much closer eyes and couldn't help but notice how close his lips were to hers now. "That's...uhm...good." She felt her cheeks getting warm and she could smell the scent of his clothes, it was all guy and that scent combined with the security of his arm around her and the warmth of his now close body all made her head swim a little. When Ethan asked what was next she had to force herself to come up with a reply, the Candor boy had knocked her off her guard that was for sure. " Oh...um.....ok the first step is... we'll move to your uhm...right and my left together and then repeat the same step back to where we were. It's the most...basic step and then we can go from there." She hoped she explained it enough, she was lucky at the moment to be able to come up with a sentence much less actually make sense of instructions on how to dance. She began to count off so he would know when to do what and they would both be moving at the same time so they wouldn't trip and end up on the ground together. " Ok, here we go...and One..." She went to move in their first step.

Ethan’s pulse seemed to be trying to set a new world record, he had been bold by pulling her close. Granted he had only meant to do it because it felt awkward being so far apart, but now he realized what he had done. There were only a few inches between them at all times now and he could feel the curves of her body pressing against his own. Curves that he could not see based on her outfit, but being so close it was much harder to disguise. She was a beautiful girl and now here he was holding her close, the feeling was intoxicating. The damn Abnegation had truly kept so much from him and now he was thankful for it. Yes it had taken him sixteen years but holding Adelaide this way, getting ready to dance with her. The feeling was amazing and he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
His eyes found hers as he awaited an answer though, hoping she wouldn’t be upset or annoyed. But her body seemed to relax around his arm and he watched as she tripped over her words. Her face filled with a slight tinge of red and he could feel his own doing the same. His next question to her a lot longer to answer and she was still tripping over her words. Was he doing this to her? By being so close? Because if he was, she was definitely doing something to him as well, hell he was glad that his voice had decided it didn’t want to ramble at the moment. He listened closely as she described the first movement, he thought that he could do that but his confidence was pretty low. Due to his lack of dancing, he was a bit worried about screwing up but that thought left him quickly as he realized she hadn’t judged him to this point and everyone else who may be watching could shove it. Ethan was having fun and that was what mattered. “Right first, then back here. Sounds simple enough” His words came out in one string, not one breath taken. He had focused so much on pushing the words out that they seemed almost rushed. Smooth Roy. His own thoughts were attacking him, he smiled at her to keep himself from making himself laugh.
He heard her begin to count and felt his body moving with hers, his arm clutching to her back and trying to sway in time with her. He stepped cautiously to his right, just as she had instructed. He then felt her body moving back to where they had started and he quickly stepped back to keep with her. Barely avoiding stepping on the blonde’s foot. They stopped when they got back to square one, and he sighed. Taking a deep breath and his body regretted it immediately. The air filled with her flowery smell, light and fruity it was truly amazing. It was addicting and it filled his nose with pure joy. He closed his eyes to fully experience it, then he realized that it could look really weird. So he opened his eyes and looked at her inquisitively “How bad was it? Terrible right. I think I can get it, just not sure how long to wait or where to step. I almost caught your foot which would have hurt cuz your shoes are so simple. Not like a bad simple, just that my shoes and strength would have…” He abruptly stopped talking and began to laugh. “Sorry bad habit”

It was a success, the two had moved relatively smoothly from one step to another and had avoided tripping, stumbling, or any injuries. Adelaide was happy with her student and she laughed a little as she watched Ethan exhale and close his eyes. She couldn't help the grin on her face, it was like the guy had just made it through the world's hardest exam. A small part of her counseling side briefly wondered if he had any tendencies towards Erudite. Just in their small meeting it had seemed to her like he wanted to perfect and excel in whatever he was doing. Then again it could have just been the way Abnegation raised him, to always do his best. She herself was the opposite to a degree. She would try hard at whatever she was doing of course, but if it just wasn't something she was good at she could accept it. She could live with being ok at something. Her short thoughts were gone when Ethan began speaking When he began rambling on again in true Ethan form by asking questions and speaking faster than she could answer she grinned. Adelaide glanced at her shoes and raised an eyebrow to his remark. " First of all you did great and second of all you would have to stomp pretty hard on my foot to hurt it ...Dauntless remember? It was a game to see who could make who tap out...I think it'd take more than an accidental foot stepping to hurt me." She smiled brightly up at him. Pain tolerance was a small upside to being dauntless born. Most of the Amity transfers from Erudite or Candor would complain about the hot sun in the fields or the pain in their backs from bending over picking fruit all day but not the Dauntless kids. While the others were complaining she was able to finish her tasks and help them with theirs too. Endurance was sometimes something that went hand in hand with both factions. She felt herself relaxing a bit more in his arms now that the initial first step was over and done with. She imaged the people around them would think they were crazy but she didn't care. She looked back up into his deep brown eyes and spoke again. " Alright so normally the guy would lead but without music that's a little hard so I'll just..." Adelaide moved her hand from around his neck to around his waist and glanced back up at him. " And when I begin to sing you'll feel my hand guiding you to where we need to move and depending on your rhythm..." She grinned a little " we should be able to dance to this fairly easy...and do not make fun of my singing." She grinned playfully and began to sing Do You Hear The People Sing? from Les Misérables. It was the only song she could think of at the moment that she knew she could sing easily without any instruments. It had been one she had sang along with a few other fellow Amity when they had put on the play a few months ago. It was easy to dance slowly with a partner to, and it's rhythm wasn't hard to follow. She hoped Ethan would get the hang of it and mentally prepared herself for a few foot stompings in case he didn't. Note: Song |
