Koda or Eileen, as she liked to be called, looked at the crowd that sat in front of them. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She had two choices, remain with her family in the Amity Faction or transfer over to Candor. She'd known for a long time she didn't belong with her mother and father, perhaps they, too had known. She was somewhat of a black sheep, and from time to time, and instigator. It's not like she wanted to piss people off, she was just stating mere truth. What was wrong with that? There was one more person in front of her, and another behind her. They were the only three left that would have to choose. Most of them had chosen to remain with their factions. How could she choose another over Amity? It was her home and she knew that her mother would be distraught. Yes, she rebelled, but she loved them none the less. Her eyes studied on the hair of the person in front of her, but she wasn't really seeing anything as her mind was consumed with dread. Her stomach wretched and she felt like throwing up. The audience were whispering among themselves, some just casting glares at other factions during times when the 16 year old chose to transfer. Eileen looked down at the carpet and rubbed her fingers over her the palm of her hand. Turning around, she looked at the other person behind her and wondered if they, too, felt what she felt. She was not brave, she couldn't possibly leave her family. But she also couldn't lie; staying with her family was impossible. There was a ringing in her ears as the next person was called out. She took a deep breath, one more and it would be her turn. Her pale green eyes began to water slightly as her throat dried. Eileen tried to produce more saliva and licked at her dry, cracked lips. It was a good thing she didn't have to speak, she didn't think she could. She wished she had gotten to talk to the other people choosing their factions; maybe she could have gotten advice from them. It certainly would have calmed her mind a bit if she'd known how they chose their faction, and if they transferred, why? She blinked, breaking eye contact with the person behind her.

Adi was one of the counselors in training chosen to walk with the other Amity to the choosing ceremony. It was a big day, it was a day when families stood to lose a child, and a day where children based their whole futures on one little choice. One tiny little drop of blood and your whole future was re-written. She stepped inside the building and thought back to her ceremony. It had only been one year ago, but it felt like a lifetime. She knew her choice, she knew it with as much certainty as she hoped these kids knew. There were rumors that the test had faults in it, and that some people were not where they belonged, but she didn't doubt her choice. No matter what a test said she was not meant to stay in Dauntless. She wasn't meant to fight and hurt.
Thinking of her old life made her look around the room, searching the hostile black-clothed people for that one familiar face. The one face that she would recognize anywhere, the face that grew up with her and that made her laugh when she was sad. She wasn't sure what she would do if she did see him. Her first instinct now would be to run and hug him, but she didn't dare do that to him. Hugging was not a "dauntless thing" and he would probably push her away just to save face. She scanned over the crowd again briefly and then turned her attention back to her group. There was nervous energy among them. There were a few families who thought they might lose their child to another faction.
It was sometimes hard for her to imagine someone choosing to leave this place. What could be so wrong with a place where everyone was encouraged to help one another. A place where they sought peace and understanding. She glanced at a man and woman whose daughter was on the stage, she would be choosing soon. She looked over at where the girl stood and didn't recognize her. It wasn't unusual, Amity was a big compound but she felt herself wishing she had introduced herself. She wished she had been able to take some time and help the girl work through her feelings. She watched as the girl's parents held hands and stood stiffly waiting for the girl's turn. She glanced again back at the stage and watched as the girl looked around, seemingly nervous. She tried to catch her eye and offer an encouraging smile.
