Thomas was a Dauntless born kid. He wanted to prove to his parents that they were wrong about him not being a good enough Dauntless. So he got tattoos and other stuff to prove it. They wouldn't believe him till he passed initiation. So even though him and his twin sister both didn't get Dauntless as their test results, they both picked Dauntless. His sister didn't make it onto the train but that was on purpose. Then he failed the first part of initiation and well he found his sister and they never left each others side. Basically Thomas is an over protective older twin brother who is way to nice for his own good. He like making friends and everything and doesn't know who he can trust and who he can't. He knows he can trust his younger sister but other than that he doesn't know who.

Being born was a rare thing in the Pain family. Most of the children before Thomas and Tina were still borns, or in other words. They were born dead. It was very rare when Thomas and Tina's mother gave birth to twins and both came out alive and healthy. The twins thought they were blessed like their mother had them believe. Only something was different about both twins. They did not belong in Dauntless. Thomas was going to go into Amity but he just couldn't bring down the family pride. Thomas didn't like being in Dauntless. He wanted to do something else but he did put up with it. He got tattoos and stuff to prove that he was dauntless. He was meant to go into Amity, he would have made it there. He knew it and so did his sister.
The day of the test him and his sister agreed no matter what they got they would stay in Dauntless. So they went through the test and just like he knew he would he got Amity. His sister told him that she got Abnegation. They both knew it didn't matter they were going to stay in Dauntless. So when the time came to pick factions they both put their hand over the faction the test gave them but remembered the promise they made to each other and quickly moved their hand over dauntless and they stayed in dauntless.
Even after they had gotten on and off the train so many times he saw his sister give up trying to get on. He looked back at her and she was smiling. She had found the easy way out. Giving up so she wouldn't have to go through initiation. Thomas knew then that he wouldn't pass initiation without his sister by his side.
Even after growing up in Dauntless Thomas failed the first part of initiation. So they threw him out and he became factionless. Thomas didn't mind it one little bit. He was able to find his twin sister this way. When he first came into the factionless community they didn't pay him any attention. He was still in his Dauntless clothes and that was all he would wear. He still will only wear the black clothing that he finds. He goes shirtless but he wears a black leather no sleeve jacket that he found. It shows off all the tattoos he got when he was Dauntless. He doesn't like remembering his time in Dauntless because now his parents hate him and his sister. They even said so to him when he got kicked out.
When he found his sister they were inseparable again just like before initiation. They went everywhere and did everything together. They still do and they never want to be separated again.
