The Candor honesty was not something that Lahni was born with. A shrink would classify her as a compulsive liar. She had to work harder than most to suppress her dishonest ways. Her family used to punish her severely for her lies, often sending her to bed without dinner. Lahni was also no stranger to long sleeve shirts. She had to cover the bruises on her arms where he parents would grab her, hard.
Lahni has always been a slight daredevil. When she was eight she got into trouble for scaling the side of her house and hiding from her family up on the roof. She is also very stubborn, refusing to do things that she doesn't want to do. She once sat at the dinner table for hours because he father told her she couldn't leave until she finished all her vegetables. Finally her father gave in and sent her to bed.
Lahni can be sweet, when she thinks a person deserves it. She hates bullies and can often be found standing up to them despite her small size. Just like Lahni was no stranger to abuse at home, she was also no stranger to abuse in public. She could certainly take a beating. Despite always getting pushed down, Lahni always gets back up. She is a fighter at heart, mix that with her defiant nature and you have one heck of a problem.
It was never a surprise to her parents that Lahni may leave Candor. It had always been the most likely decision for her to make. They had even assumed that she would go to dauntless because she was too daring to be happy anywhere else.

history: Lahni was born into the typical Candor family. All they had wanted was the perfect daughter, and they didn't think that it was too much to ask of a little girl. The first time Lahni lied to her parents she was only three years old. Shannon had asked Lahni if she had brushed her teeth, and Lahni had told her yes. After that day Shannon and Marcus uncovered lie after lie that Lahni told. Finally they got tired of just telling her to stop and decided to try and make her stop. They made sure that when they would "punish" her, never to leave marks anywhere that would raise any questions. They believed that if no one asked, then it wasn't lying.
When Lahni was eight she tried to run away for the first time. She made it almost a mile before a family friend found her and picked her up. They drug her kicking and screaming back to her parents. After a few more failed attempts to escape, Lahni decided that she needed to change something. She decided she could try to be honest, but she was no good at that. She didn't know why. Instead she decided that she would just be a better liar. She stopped lying about the little things that didn't matter. She combined her skills to lie and she learned to be honest, at least about the things that wouldn't hurt people. She became believable in her lies and in the truth.
Lahni began to do her daredevil stunts in private. She would sneak out at night to scale buildings. She liked to sit on top and marvel at what she had accomplished. When Lahni was fourteen she decided she wanted to mount the train like the Dauntless did. She watched the kids from the school do it and decided that it wouldn't be that hard. So she snuck out one night and she jumped on the train. It was exhilarating, and then she had to dismount. She spent almost an hour on that train, picking a place to get off. When she finally did jump, she landed on her left arm, breaking her wrist. When she finally made it home the next morning, Lahni was locked in the basement. Her parents called her into the school sick and left her down there with her broken arm for two days before taking her in to have the bone reset.
The day that Lahni took her test was quite literally the happiest day of her life. When it was confirmed that she was Dauntless she was extremely happy. She picked Dauntless the next day, not even bothering to think she should stay with her parents.
It was late and Lahni knew that most sane people were in bed by now, but she didn't like sleeping at night. Night time was when the sky came to life. She loved to sit and watch the twinkling lights. Every once in a while she would see a shooting star. She remembered when she was little, before things turned bad at home, and she would lay outside with her mom. Her mother would tell her stories about how people once believed the stars were magic.
Lahin sighed out loud, stealthily maneuvering herself so that she could see the sky better. The branch she was sitting on was about mid way up the tree and there were too many other branches in her way. She decided that she would try to climb further up the tree so that she could see the night sky better. She studied the branches above her for a second, deciding where to start, before she began to scale further up the tree. Finally she reached a branch that would hold her weight. She lightly moved her way on it, laying her head on the trunk of the tree and looking up.
There was still a few branches between her and the night sky, but not as many as before. She stared at the stars, her eyes darting, searching for a shooting star. She new it was silly but she had a wish. Actually it was less of a wish, and more of a request for the universe. She sat for almost an hour when suddenly one shot by, bright and clear. She stared for a moment, marveling at its beauty. Then it was gone. She squeezed her eyes shut and bowed her head. Please let my aptitude test, test positive for Dauntless, please. She opened her eyes to the night sky and smiled. She just knew her request would be met.
