JOSSLYN GRACE WINTHROP-- SIXTEEN -- DAUNTLESS full name: Josslyn Grace Winthrop nicknames: Joss age: Sixteen faction birthplace: Abnegation current faction: Dauntless sexuality: Heterosexual occupation: Initiate play by: Bella Heathcote
personality:
On the surface Joss seems like the poster child for the ideal Abnegation person - she's quiet and selfless. Her quietness isn't normal however, since Joss was diagnosed with selective mutism when she was only five years old. It was caused by seeing a traumatic event - but what happened at the event is still the question of doctors. Growing up she was a very bright and eager child. Her father kept her active through several activities - dancing being the main one, but only in the privacy of their blank living quarters. After he died, Joss reverted into her shell and became a timid and quiet child. She was obedient, she was quiet and she was her mother's perfect little porcelain doll. But Joss was from happy, and often restless and defiant of the life she was given.
Being only able to say single words and simple phases now - Joss's treatment has come along way. Though she's unable to give a speech and explain things verbally. Despite her limited speech, she's actually a very intelligent young woman and very aware of the world around her. As the years have gone by, she eventually shed her cocoon of shyness and has grown into a very friendly person for the most part. Though she's afraid to be touched and even more afraid to be alone with less than a few people. Her hesitance of touch wasn't because she was shy - merely because at home, being touched meant she was going to be beaten and she only felt safe when she was a safe distance away from others - usually being three feet or more.
Joss is rather comfortable among her peers for the most part - but quickly grows uncomfortable if they get in her 'bubble'. She would transform from a bright, happy person, to an anxious and awkward young lady. Though you wouldn't see much change on the surface - Joss keeps her constant blank and therefore plain expression despite no longer being apart of Abnegation. Joss's untamed curiosity can sometimes override her hesitation of being touched. She is unafraid of climbing and heights and loves to run. She doesn't like it when others are sad and has a fun loving quirk in her that increasingly sparks her need for adventure. For what is life if one doesn't take risks?
Her greatest fears would have to be her mother and step-father, what she saw that caused her muteness and being beaten up. She has several smaller fears - fear of the dark (the thought of seeing nothing was worse than being able to say nothing), being alone and swimming - since Joss doesn't know how to swim. Many often assume that Joss is a passive person - but that wouldn't be a correct observation. Though she may seem like she has everything together, on the inside she's tangled mess. Since she is unable to communicate properly yet, she can become frustrated when trying to explain things to others as well as others attempting help her because of disadvantage. She doesn't appreciate help that often and will often refuse it so she can do it herself.
Her father often called her his little Cinderella - especially when they were dancing. And she feels most relaxed when she's dancing, though she hasn't done it in front of anyone since her father died. And she had to keep it hidden from her mother and step-father because it was considered 'selfish and disobedient' behavior. Joss often felt like an outcast - since she felt barred from many of her piers. She was often that she was different from them, and different people didn't get the same treatment as others - or at least that's how her step-father explained it. And as she entered in her teen years, she became even more defiant towards the man.
The world was within reach and after choosing to transfer from Abnegation, Joss has since become a more settled person. No longer did she have to listen her step-father and mother or just deal with what she had been given. In her new faction it was up to her what she wanted to do. And she has been working even harder to learn how to speak and become more independent. Her determined and fun-loving spirit has managed to endure adversity for this long and she hope it will help her through her incoming initiation and life among her new family. Though she's not technically in yet, since she still has to pass initiation, she has high hopes for her future.
Joss used to be the girl that would step aside and let someone else run her life, but not anymore. Since choosing Dauntless, Joss had begun transforming into her own person - one that knew what she wanted, and now she just had to work to get it. She originally saw life as an uphill battle, but now as she has began her life in Dauntless, she realized that would be a bumpy road ahead. Not that she had expected it to be smooth sailing, but there were many things she had finally placed behind her. Her mother, her step-father, and the abuse, they had all faded into the background, and like a Phoenix, Joss planned on rising from the ashes. And most of all she wants to be like her father - brave, compassionate and strong.
mother: Juliet Eveline Beringer (nee' Byrne, formerly Winthrop) father: Lawrence Vincent Winthrop (deceased) siblings: n/a other: Clive Jonathan Beringer (step-father) history:
Joss was the daughter of two transfers, her father, who was from Dauntless and her mother, who was from Erudite. They were quite the odd couple and often fought more than agreeing on anything. Still, after Joss's birth, she soon became the apple of her father's eye and continued to be as she grew up. As soon as she was able to walk, her father taught her how to dance - since it was something he often did with his mother when he lived back in Dauntless, his mother had been an Amity transfer. Her mother wasn't supportive of her dancing and often argued with her father to stop such nonsense. He didn't listened to her however, and Joss continued to learn how to dance.
After turning five, things greatly changed for the young girl. Her father was one of the council representatives and had been meeting with people Erudite quite often due to the conflict between the two factions. During one of his meetings, Joss was allowed to come along since her mother was out helping distribute food to the factionless that day. So her and her father walked the streets of the city and went to Navy Pier where he met an older Erudite couple under the name of Gavin and Sophia. Unlike the past meetings, these two Erudite were quite sympathetic to the Abnegation and were trying to work something out.
That would explain why they were meeting at the pier and not in one of the office buildings - this was a secret meeting. Her father started with small talk and it appeared the meeting was to be a pleasant one. Sophia and Gavin even spoke directly to Joss, mention that they had a pair of twins that were the same age as she was. The adults went back to talking again after that and near the end of the meeting, were about to shake hands. It was then that a gunshot echoed against the open air, and suddenly Sophia had fallen. Her husband was quickly at her side, but realized that she had died instantly.
It was then her father shoved Joss towards one of abandoned buildings on the pier. Joss ran into one, and crawled under a metal table of sort. Bullets hummed in the air once more before silence followed. The young girl waited a few minutes before peering out from hiding place. There were two bodies on the ground - the couple from Erudite but her father was still standing. There was no sign of a weapon but he was holding his arm as if he were bleeding before turning as the tall man came towards him. Joss didn't say a word - but merely watched as the man placed a gun to her father's head before pointing at the dead Erudite.
They seemed to be arguing over something, what exactly she wasn't sure, she was too far away to hear. She just knew she couldn't go out there, she was far too afraid of the strange tall man and why he was hurting her father. As the seen continued to unfold, the tall man advanced towards her father with the gun. What happened after that…well even she wasn't sure, since she fainted as the man charged towards her father. She woke up later in the hospital; a nurse beside her was checking her vitals. She wasn't harmed but soon someone came to usher her to one of the large business buildings where someone from Candor interrogated her.
She didn't tell them anything - she didn't even respond to their questions. Instead, she just stared at them blankly but she did remember the events leading up to it. She just wasn't able to tell them and she shied away from them when they tried to touch her. Finally they just let her return home to be with her mother. What was odd was her mother wasn't really broken up when she was dropped off at the Abnegation housing. Instead she asked cooed over her daughter for a few minutes before returning to her normal routine, even with a skip to her step. Joss didn't question it however, since she was too young to truly understand what had just transpired.
Her mother soon remarried to a man named Clive, who was also a transfer from Erudite. He was ten years younger than her mother but unlike her previous marriage, there wasn't any arguing. Clive was a much harsher man than her father and quickly set down ground rules as soon as he stepped into their home. No dancing, no running, Joss would go to school, she would come home and she would go to bed. Clive would see to it that she was the perfect little Abnegation child or she'd have to face the consequences. And the worst part was…Clive was the tall man, but she was unable to tell anyone.
The consequences, which she soon learned was basically Clive beating her up if she strayed out of line. If she wasn't doing well, that's what would happen. He refrained from hitting her in the face, so that way no one notice her bruises since the Abnegation wore long and baggy clothing. A few months after Clive and her mother married, she was diagnosed with selective mutism and was given treatment through speech therapy. Where she would meet once a week with a Erudite specialists that would help her learn how to talk again. After that, life continued on without much for Joss to look forward to.
As her sixteenth birthday approached, she knew she couldn't remain in Abnegation any longer. It might've been selfish of her to want to separate herself from her faction, but it wasn't the faction she couldn't stand, it was Clive. The day Joss took her aptitude test was the day she would decide where to go. When that day finally came, Joss did everything she could to not test as Abnegation - she chose to be selfish in order to get a different result on her test. When the results came in, she was surprised by what result she received but she knew it was her choice ultimately in the end.
Choosing day didn't come fast enough, and she was spooked coming to it since Clive had given her a talk about what she should choose and to him the obvious was Abnegation, where she was under their control. Joss didn't know if that were true, the faction she had chosen hadn't necessarily been the one that was correct for her - but it was the one she decided would provide her with the most security. She could be herself there, and she would learn to defend herself. When it was her turn to finally rise up and make her choice, Joss was firm on her decision.
And she made sure her step-father was watching when she cut her hand and placed it over the faction of her choice. She even smiled as Clive rose up in his chair in disgust as Joss's blood dripped into the bowl filled with lit coals. Joss had chosen Dauntless - her father's former faction, a choice she was proud of. If she had chosen any of the other factions…she felt she would of appeared weak towards Clive. So upon choosing Dauntless, it was like slapping him in the face, and to be honest that felt pretty good. In Dauntless she would only have to answer to herself, and her superiors and she wouldn't have to feel so different.
