Lucas carried his tray to a table in the middle of the room and sat down beside members he knew. He nodded as a greeting but kept his gaze at the plate. Listening to their conversation he poked the meat with his fork several times before stuffing a piece into his mouth. The meat looked appetizing more than the vegetables which looked pretty over cooked. After that one bite he realized he wasn't really hungry but still forced a few more pieces down his throat. He emptied his glass of clear soda in one shot, gulping down the beverage as if he were in a hurry. Then he put the fork down, elbows propped up on the table as he rested his head on them. Laughter surrounded the table in different tones - from deep voices to shrill sounds.
Bigger groups of initiates and Dauntless members entered - soon the dining hall was crowded. The noise level kept rising at a steady level. By the time Lucas was finished with his meal he couldn’t hear his acquaintance’s words anymore. He shoved his plates to the side and got up from his seat, slamming his hands on the table in annoyance. Ignoring the looks the others gave him out of surprise he stomped out of the dining hall into the corridor of the Pit.
Absent-minded he walked towards the Chasm, trailing the cold metal railing with his hand. The cold touch and the silence felt more comfortable than the noisy and busy hall. The blonde leaned forward resting his elbows on the railing as he listened to the water splashing against the rock walls. Admittetely it was one of the most dangerous places at the Dauntless headquarters but he almost grew up down here. Back then he used to spent so much time here with his brother and parents . . . good old times.
Lucas noticed a silhouette out of the corner of his eye. Turning his head around he watched someone stretching their arm toward the bottom of the railing trying to grab something with no luck. At least thats what it looked like. He shrugged it off, not really caring what that person did and turning his attention back to the ravine below the Chasm before an alarming shaking of the railing caused him to snap his head to the side. He blankly stared at the young boy, recognizing him as an initiate, as he climbed over the railing. Reckless fool, he thought. There have been a few deaths of initiates who couldn't take it anymore, so it wouldn't be surprising to find another one at the bottom of the ravine.
"If you are trying to kill yourself wait until I’m gone." He said in a cold demeanor, eyes shifting back to the water.
notes: this is just a thread idea I had which was I thought would be fun <3 the initiate lost her necklace/bracelet which she/he is trying to get and climbs over the railing to get it. if she/she falls..well that would be fun!

Heart pounding, sweat glistening off his palms and the water crashing into his face. Reaching his hand as far as it would go but with no avail he would have to go over the railing. Diggs had been walking rather quickly, a lot closer to the Chasm than he had ever intended to be. He had just awoken from a nap and eventually he would learn to stop sleeping all together. Though his dreams were filled with memories of her, waking up was the same every time. Watching her fall over and over again, until he tore himself from his sleep. He had taken the necklace, her necklace from around his neck and was pressing it between his thumb and forefinger as he walked. Talking to himself as he walked. Telling her how much he loved her and that he wanted her to be safe and with him. That’s when he realized where he was, the sound of the water crashing below and it was too late before he realized he was getting hit with an incoming wave. The water knocked the necklace loose from his grip and he screamed. He placed his head on the railing and bashed down on it, how could he lose it. The one thing he had of hers left, the only thing still connecting them physically. Then he saw the flash of light.
Hanging on by the slimmest of margins the necklace was hanging from the last possible rung of the platform, just finger tips out of his reach and one mistake would lead to his loss of the necklace forever. He looked at the railing and hoisted himself onto it, if it broke under his weight he was dead, and what scared him was that he wasn’t sure he cared. He flipped himself over the railing seamlessly when he felt the vibrations, someone else was holding on to the railing but he couldn’t bear to look for them and risk falling. He looked down and saw the necklace but more so the possible death that awaited him below.
That’s when he spoke, Diggs couldn’t make it out but it looked like one of his instructors but he couldn’t tell which. By his tone, he was not happy to find an initiate in this predicatment but Diggs had it all under control so he wasn’t worried. Then he felt the water against his legs, strong and with enough power to sweep him off his footholds. With no footing, his hands slid down the railing and now he was holding on with just his hands. From here he could grab the necklace but he wasn’t sure he could hold himself up. He looked over at the small A on the chain and shook his head, he had to get it. But if he did would it cost him his life. He tried to pull himself up to see if it would be possible, it wasn’t. Great now what. He looked to his left and remembered the voice. “Hello. Could use…a hand…down here” He hated asking for help but he wasn’t sure he was ready to die anymore.

The sudden movement of the railing said it all. He did not need to see what happened, to see that someone slipped and was now trying to hold on for their life. The instructor sighed as he straightened his back, lifting his elbows which rested on the cool metal to only grab the railing with his hands as if he tried to steady the shaking. How come there was never a place to have some time alone? A, right. It was the Dauntless sector. They are everything but quiet. Turning his head to look over where the voice came from he gazed, narrowing his eyes at the person.
He crossed his arms over his chest, blue eyes staring down at the initiate dangling from the Chasm. "I can see that." he replied at the request to help. While he wasn't the cruelest initiator of the Dauntless he wasn't the nicest either. However, he was strict and he wouldn't let just anyone think he would help if they needed help after doing something as stupid as crawling over the Chasm. They were not warned after arriving for no reason. The old Lucas might have helped, even without being asked. Lucas showed no interest of helping, not even the faintest twitch of his lips.
"Transfer." the blonde said, tilting his head slightly sideways. "I see why you changed factions." he stated. "Not much of a brainy it seems." he continued as he watched the former Erudite barely grasping what was left of that part of the railing. Lifting his right foot slightly he kicked against the metal railing which he kept a safe distance from. The sound echoed through the space they occupied, bouncing off the stone walls. The ravine beneath looking dangerously wild. "What were you trying to do?" he asked calmly while taking two steps forward. But his arms trembled, so he tensed his muscles to keep still. Why? He wasn't actually scared of the Chasm itself - but of the memories it beared. He could spot the exact place and still get himself into thinking to be able to smell the blood from down there, which by now would have been washed away by the ravine underneath. As time passed it was getting easier but not it was not completely gone. The boy flinched as a high wave hit the wall, splashing water across his feet. He dropped his head, watching a drop of water sliding off of his black boots before daring to lift his head again, his attention immediately turning back to the helpless initiate.
"I'll consider helping you, if your answer is acceptable. If it isn't. . ." Ending his sentence with a shrug he stayed silently at the edge, waiting for the younger boy's response.

Diggs was trying to concentrate solely on the idea of living, of continuing on with this life and being the best he could be. Which in this moment meant holding onto that railing with all that he had, while waiting for this instructor to decide whether or not to help him. His voice rung out, rich with condescension and he decided to bite his tongue, stupid ass had no idea that Diggs had more intelligence in his toenail than most of these twerps had in their whole body. He was for all intents and purposes a genius but he had no thirst for knowledge, no desire to continue to learn. He was brave and he was going to prove it to himself, to all of his doubters and to Abby.
He needed the help unfortunately and he could see the young man approaching him, his name was Lucas and he was a good instructor, bit of an ass from time to time, but a good instructor all in all. He let his eyes find Lucas and he wasn’t going to beg him, he wasn’t going to lessen himself for him. He then turned to eye the necklace, still hanging by a thread, quite literally.
“Clearly y’know who I am. You know my backstory” he paused and hung his head for a moment, gripping with all of his might. He could feel the muscles in his arm rippling with pain and it was only a percentage of the pain he was experiencing at the idea of losing this necklace or even more so explaining it to Lucas in exchange for his life. “See the necklace hanging on that last rung, it was hers. She asked me to hold onto it and now…now it’s all I have left of her.” He hung his head again, he knew it wouldn’t be what he considered acceptable. He was going to let him fall and Diggs wasn’t ready for that. “I…that’s all I got” He let out a moan as he felt water rising up again and slamming against him, he gritted his teeth and pulled with all his might, he wasn’t sure he had the upper body strength. But he knew it was his only chance.

He listented to his junior as he kept talking about the girl he lost at their first day as initiates and how this piece of jewelry was the only thing left of her to him. Lucas was just staring blankly at the brunette before sighing ever so slightly. Pulling at the hem of his sleeves he absentmindly patted the railing dry as he observed the other's actions.
Clearly y’know who I am. You know my backstory. he let the words repeat in his head reacting with nothing more than a light shrug to them. "I do know your backstory but the thing is I don't really care. Whatever your backstory is won't help you here." except perhaps to gain the strength to survive but he didn't say it out loud. if he hadn't changed so much Lucas would have rushed to his aid especially after hearing that teardrop story of his but now he didn't. almost everyone had somewhat of a tragic history, some more, some less. initiates happen to die, it was rare but it happened especially during the ceremony day while jumping from the train to the roof for the first time. sometimes it was just smarter to keep sitting in the train and simply become factionless.
"Let go of the railing to keep the necklace and lose your life. Let go of the necklace to let go of her to keep your life. There might be a chance of retrieving it later." he told him, his eyes fixed on the initate as he outstretched his arm halfway, still keeping it on the railing itself to steady it daring to be near the edge than he had ever been. Letting go of the past can be a very important solution to get ones life going again although he would never admit it. He was holding on to past memories like any other human being but he learned to push it to the very far of his mind where it never bothered him during the day - only during the night while he was asleep. What he just said was harsh and probably not the best motivation to keep someone from throwing themselves off of the chasm but then again you couldn't really blame him. He didn't know how to act or what to say to sound friendly and more encouraging so the majority of things which left his lips were pessimistic thoughts.

Diggs felt his grip getting thinner and thinner, soon he would fall to his death and that he was not ready for. He watched his trainer’s face barely recognize the fact that he was speaking, he looked bored as if he had heard this story before and it was overplayed for his liking. As he spoke, he realized that very thing to be true, he didn’t care about what Diggs was going through. How much this necklace meant to him, this last piece of Abigail. But the Dauntless weren’t about sentimental value, they were about Bravery, toughness in the face of danger and Lucas was teaching him that firsthand. His love for Abigail, the man he had been just a few days ago. That wouldn’t save him, his new found toughness and his desire to live on, to be the best he could be. That was his drive. He glanced again at the necklace, his mind spinning. Was he really about to let this go?
His mind was racing when Lucas spoke again, little to know emotion as it always was with him. He had laid out all of his choices, live or die. That was what it came down to, and Diggs chose to live. He swung his body hard to the left before pushing up and gripping Lucas’ biceps. He pulled himself up and felt Lucas return the grip, pulling him up and over the railing, depositing him onto the ground. Colton took a deep breath and closed his eyes, that was entirely too close. “Thanks” He breathed as he kicked up off of the ground and stood face to face with the initiate trainer.
He cracked his neck and then looked back at the man who had saved his life. “Moving on to keep my life. Is that a real thing?” He could feel his life changing before his very eyes. Maybe this man who know better than him how it worked, what it all meant. If life had a true progression that included loss and remorse.
