A very quiet individual, Gideon has been known to be a man of very little words. His serious and reserved nature has been both a benefit and curse for him throughout his life. Calculating and aloof, he's never been one to give a welcoming presence when he's in public. He is however, exceedingly loyal to those that have earned his trust but it is not easily won. Gideon keeps a biased stance in most situations, he prefers to thoroughly think over things before making decisions. Though he may not be that open of a person, he does have a heart, and he will help others when he believes it is needed. Like all Candor, he is brutally honest and looks down upon the values of the Amity.
However he does not see the world as black and white like his faction does - and believes there are several gray areas within it. Composed and proud, he holds his head up and isn't afraid to say how he feels. However, what the faction sees and what his family sees is two very different people. In the view of his faction, Gideon is the prestigious and honest politician that tackles issues with an iron grip and a steel determination. Towards his children you will find a very compassionate man that values self expression and resilience. He wants his children to be themselves - no matter what their true selves happen to be.
Beneath the stern surface, Gideon isn't as cool headed as he would like you to believe. In fact he had anger management issues as a child and sought counseling. He still has quite the temper - though it hasn't been violent in years. Even more intriguing is the fact that he has a soft spot for children - having fathered three himself, he goes out of his way to get to know them and has been known to offer a bit of encouragement. Since the children are the factions future, they have to be nurtured and taught the contents of character. He even makes it a point to meet his factions initiates at least once and enjoys watching their initiations.
Not many people have seen him laugh or cry for that matter, he prefers to keep those matters private. Smiling as well, has been a rarity for this gentleman though he has been known to always smile without fail if he is amused. Ever since his wife's passing, he hasn't really pursued any other women, though his daughters have often tried to set him up on dates. His relationship with his son however, hasn't been the best as of late. Gideon sees a lot of himself in him, and has tried countless times to renew their father and son bond, to no avail. He's still searching for a way to get through to him.

Gideon's birth wasn't a happy one for Dorinda. The woman had only been eighteen when she had met his father Malcolm - a Dauntless Guard and ended up having a one night stand with him. Nine months later Gideon was born and Dorinda, who was a lawyer, had to juggle being a mother and a lawyer. Nevertheless, Gideon was immersed in the Candor culture only a couple of years after he was born. He went with his mother almost everywhere - unless he wasn't permitted to go, and was a very docile and quiet child. After Gideon turned five, his mother finally married a man named Darren Abernathy and she soon became pregnant with her second child.
At first the little boy wasn't sure about having siblings - that meant he had to share his mom, and he was already sharing with her new husband. When little Arty was born however, he quickly accepted his role of big brother and was often the one looking after him as he grew older. As he entered school, his mother ended up having two more children - this time two little girls. He took it upon himself to be there for them and was their designated babysitter growing up. School hadn't been that much of a problem for him and he often scored high on tests.
When choosing day came around, he chose Candor to remain with his family, despite his slight interest in Dauntless. After passing initiation, he became an investigator in training and began working cases. He met and married Luciana MacDonald a few years later, and she soon became pregnant with what they would be their first child. It turned out to be more than one, and Gideon was blessed with twins. Lillian and Cora looked a lot like him, but they definitely had the personality of their mother.
Both very smart and humorous - they simply loved to laugh. He doted on them often and was always quite proud of his little girls. A year after they were born, Luciana gave him another child - a son, but due to complications Luciana died during his birth. He was devastated over her loss and soon became very detached. From then on he was a single father, and he did his best to watch over them as they grew up under his care. He has since remained unmarried since his wife's death.
After his son Hunter turned five, Gideon was assigned to a particular case - aptly named the Winthrop - Gallagher case but was never able to solve it, seeing as his only lead was a little girl that refuse to speak. A few years after that case went cold, Gideon rose up the Candor ladder and was soon became the Head of Candor. He kept his political and family life separate and has been leading Candor for the past six years with a firm but honest mindset.
Choosing day for his twins came sooner than he had expected and he wasn't quite prepared for his daughters' decisions. He hadn't been upset when Cora chose Erudite, but he was a little bit disappointed. What really floored him, was when Lillian went on stage, the man had expected his eldest to choose Candor and remain with her father, but instead ended up choosing Amity. Amity…of all the factions out there, she had to choose the one his father had been strongly against. He wasn't angry…just confused about her choice. His daughter had always been the kind and friendly sort but he never expected this choice. It felt like a betrayal.
The only child remaining at home now was Hunter. Gideon and Hunter often argued since the twins left, Hunter completely supported there transfers while Gideon was still distraught about them leaving. Gideon became even more detached, and though he saw his son every day, they hardly ever exchanged words. He really wanted to reach out to him, but hasn't find a way to that yet. These days he spends a lot of time at work and spends very little time at home. Life for Gideon has come to another crossroads and has pinned all his hopes of getting through to Hunter and hopefully, having at least one of his children choose Candor.
